In my mountaineering days, I spent at least a week each year in the wilderness, mostly in the Sierra backcountry. There is one spectacular experience that will always remain running through my heart - this Art attempts to capture that special moment.
The Evolution Valley is an extremely dramatic geological feature in the heart of the High Sierra. One adventuresome approach is a cross-country route over Lamarck Col in the looming shadow of Mt. Darwin. When it’s “Early spring Breakup” in June, the frozen lakes are turning streams into rivers, and late snowpack is giving way to the early wildflowers with hibernating animals emerging.
On this particular visit, we crested Lamarck Col and started down the steep icy scree to where we would meet up with the John Muir Trail. As we came into view of the trail at the canyon bottom below, we heard an ominous roar. Rounding the ridge, we viewed this cascading torrent. Recent snow
